At 46, Thierry Henry remains a football icon. He etched his name in history by captaining France to World Cup victory in 1998 and then adding the European Championship title just two years later
While Henry boasts a trophy cabinet overflowing with a Champions League title at Barcelona and two each of Premier Leagues and FA Cups with Arsenal, his biggest disappointment remains missing the 2000 Sydney Olympics with France.
This unfulfilled dream could shape his decisions as he coaches France’s U23 team this summer, with Kylian Mbappé potentially being one of his over-age picks.
WHAT DID THE ARSENAL LEGEND SAY?
“We choked,” Henry admits, “knocked out by an Italian team stacked with talent too. It’s a bitter pill I still haven’t swallowed.” according to TheSUN.
The Arsenal legend conyinues, his voice filled with a hint of regret, “Sure, I achieved incredible things afterwards, but that loss always lingered. Little did I know, destiny would offer a chance at redemption, leading a team with a shot at glory on home soil.”
“The Olympics,” Henry reflects, “that’s the one trophy missing from my cabinet. It’s a wild thought, honestly, 26 years after the World Cup, to be here facing such an opportunity.”
The Olympic journey kicks off with a bang as France takes on the USA in their opening match on July 24th in Marseille. And the grand finale set, as the fight for gold unfolds at the iconic Parc des Princes in Paris on August 9th!
