Manchester United Player Hints at Gareth Southgate as Ten Hag’s Replacement
Manchester United’s managerial situation remains unclear, with speculation swirling about Erik ten Hag’s future after a disappointing season. Former Liverpool player Jason McAteer claims to have spoken with a Manchester United player who believes Gareth Southgate will be the next manager.
Ten Hag on the Brink After Dismal Run
Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday has intensified scrutiny on Ten Hag. The Red Devils are in danger of missing out on European qualification altogether. Several managers, including Thomas Tuchel, have already been linked with the job at Old Trafford.
McAteer’s Conversation with a Manchester United Player
According to McAteer, he spoke with a Manchester United player last week who seemed to suggest that Ten Hag’s time at the club is coming to an end.
“I won’t reveal his name to protect his identity,” McAteer said on beIN Sports. “But he’s a Manchester United player, and I bumped into him recently. We got to talking about the end of the season and his thoughts on the manager’s situation. He didn’t give me any impression that Ten Hag is expected to stay.”
McAteer said they discussed potential replacements for Ten Hag. “We mentioned a few names and who might be a good fit,” he said. “The player didn’t seem enthusiastic when I brought up Thomas Tuchel’s name.” When asked about Jose Mourinho, McAteer replied that his source did not mention him either.
Southgate the Frontrunner According to McAteer
“Gareth Southgate was the next name that came up,” McAteer said. “And that’s the one the player seemed to respond to positively.”
McAteer believes this is an indication of the sentiment within the Manchester United squad. “Players can sense these things,” he said. “When the manager’s job is on the line, there are whispers going around the team. They pick up on it. And I just got the feeling that a change is coming.”
Neville Advocates for Patience with Ten Hag
While McAteer suggests a change in management is imminent, Gary Neville believes Ten Hag deserves another season at the helm.
“I don’t see a clear replacement for Ten Hag who is readily available,” Neville said on Sky Sports. “Other clubs are struggling to find new managers as well. I think United should give Ten Hag another season, especially if they can avoid a similar injury crisis.”
Neville acknowledges the challenges faced by Ten Hag. “There seems to be a deeper issue at Old Trafford that has affected multiple managers and players over the past decade,” he said. “Hopefully, the new ownership can bring some stability and allow the current manager and squad to perform to their potential.”
Neville remains optimistic about Manchester United’s future success. “There’s no guarantee, but history suggests that United will eventually return to winning ways,” he concluded.
