Elegba Morais Augusto fondly known as Dona Celeste and the mother to Brazilian football star Pélé passed on at the age of 101. She was the mother of Pele, the man, WHO has the record of the most number of world cups won. Pele died on December 29 when his organs ruptured due to colon cancer, a month after Celeste’s 100th birthday.
Final Farewell to Pele
A hearse with the coffin of Pele also went by Celeste’s residence while on its way to burial grounds. Yet, Owing to her condition, Celeste was not in a complete understanding of some of the occurrences that occurred surrounding her son’s death. Maria Lucia do Nascimento, the last surviving sibling of Pele, mentioned in a central interview that their mother was not functional enough to understand Pele’s death.
Pele’s last surviving sibling, shared in an interview that their mother wasn’t lucid enough to comprehend Pele’s passing. “We talk but she doesn’t know the situation. She’s in her own world,” Maria said. Celeste, who referred to Pele by his childhood nickname Dico but she was kept in the dark on more details.

Recently, there was a post on the official Pele IG profile (@pele) dedicated to Celeste 18 months after her death, reacting to the news. The Pele Foundation honored her with a heartfelt message: Every famous figure we may be familiar with has a mother offering all the needed encouragement to make our dreams come through, The dynast was referred to as queen-mother signifying the level of esteem she garnered.

Remembering Dona Celeste
The first message in the tribute was brief but pointed; ‘It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Pele’s mother, Dona Celeste.’ Celebrated as a role model of a mother to Pele, she both shaped and encouraged his humanitarian values that he adopted to promote all through his life and career.
