After a goalless draw in normal time, Ronaldo was given the opportunity to put his team ahead in the first half of extra-time after Diogo Jota was hauled down in the penalty area.

A new video has now emerged showing Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, 69, crying in the stands following his miss. The striker appeared to glance up at his mum crying, which might have set off his emotional meltdown on the field.

The game eventually ended in a goalless draw as both teams readied themselves for the penalty shootout.

Cristiano Ronaldo however made amends by stepping up to score the opening penalty for Roberto Martinez’s team, after Diogo Costa stopped Slovenia’s first spot kick.

Portugal ultimately prevailed 3-0 in the shootout to move on to the quarterfinals, where they will take on France.
