Argentina captain Lionel Messi has revealed a player he wishes to score when they take on Colombia in the Copa America final.
In preparation for the final, Messi expressed his desire for forward Angel Di María to score a goal to cap off his international career.
Di Maria has a knack for scoring crucial goals, having scored in La Albiceleste’s last two major tournament finals – 2022 World Cup final and the only goal in final of the last edition of Copa America, which helped Argentina secure their first major trophy since 2001.
The 36-years-old also scored the only goal in 2008 Beijing Olympic final against Nigeria to help Argentina clinch the much coveted trophy.
Lionel Messi’s wish
After 15 years, Di María has already declared his intention to retire from international football and Messi has wished that his long-time teammate and friend signs off by scoring another goal in Sunday’s final.
“Who knows, maybe he’ll score another goal in the final like he did in all the previous ones he’s played in. It would be extraordinary,” Messi said in an interview with Direct TV Sports, as quoted by The Daily Star.
“We always tell him that if everything goes well, we have playoff games coming up. Nevertheless, ‘Fideo’ [Di María] has made up his mind and there’s nothing that can change it,” he added.
Meanwhile Sports Buddy recently reported that Lionel Messi has declared himself physically fit for the final as he aims to claim his second Copa America trophy this weekend.
