Toto Schillaci, Italy’s star of the 1990 World Cup, passes away at the age of 59. Schillaci, famous for his explosive celebrations and unforgettable performances, recently had heart complications and rushed to the hospital during the weekend.
His death was confirmed this morning, leaving the football world in mourning.

Before the 1990 World Cup, Schillaci was virtually unknown in football circles outside Italy. But during the tournament, his six goals contributed to the Azzurris reaching the semi-finals on home soil.
His energetic style and eye-catching celebrations made him a global sensation. Italy’s journey ended in heartbreak, losing to Argentina on penalties, but Schillaci claimed the Golden Boot and was named the tournament’s best player.

A Glittering Career
Schillaci was born in Sicily and started his professional career with Messina, where he was the top scorer of the Serie B season. He was signed by Juventus in mid-1990, where he scored 15 goals in his debut season and won the Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup.
Schillaci had spells at Inter Milan before rounding off his soccer playing days with Jubilo Iwata of the Japanese J. League, where he clinched the title in 1997.
