Dosu, a key member of the Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold-winning squad, detailed his ordeal on Facebook on Friday.

“To God be the glory, another death escape by Grace and Mercy of God… I and my friend SM were at Enyo filling station after Ojodu Berger bus stop, to get fuel… when this MACK TRUCK with registration number LND 470 XX, fully loaded with IRON, left the road and crushed my car.”

Dosu Joseph’s recent near-death experience is not his first encounter with tragedy. His promising football career was tragically cut short in 1997 after a car accident that nearly left him paralysed.

Following Nigeria’s gold-medal triumph at the 1996 Olympics, Dosu signed for Serie A club Reggiana, but at 23, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper would see his career come to an end as a result of the heartbreaking incident.

Reflecting on the incident in an interview with Vanguard, Dosu recounted,

“After we played against Kenya… I decided to visit my family… I was driving along Ikorodu Road at about 8 p.m. when the car veered off. I don’t know what happened, but I was seriously injured. I thank God I’m alive today, even though I remain on crutches.”

Despite these ordeals, Dosu’s football achievement remains impressive.

He played a key role in Julius Berger’s 1996 Nigeria FA Cup win, keeping a clean sheet in the final against Katsina United.

As the only home-based player in Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic team, Dosu earned the starting goalkeeper role, despite being the least experienced.

He went on to represent Nigeria in three more matches, including a 2-0 win against Burkina Faso in the November 1996 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a friendly against Morocco in December 1996, and his final game, a World Cup qualifier against Kenya in January 1997.

Meanwhile, in other news from Sports Buddy, the Super Eagles have been dealt a huge blow, with star striker Victor Osimhen being ruled out of the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.
