Nigerian winger Henry Onyekuru is set to make a surprise return to Turkish football, as he closes in on a move to Super Lig side Gençlerbirliği.
Sources in Turkey say the club has opened talks with Onyekuru’s camp and both sides are close to sealing a deal. If finalized, the 28-year-old will join the Ankara-based team after spending two seasons with Al-Fayha in the Saudi Pro League.
At Al-Fayha, Onyekuru found the net 11 times in 38 matches.
Despite leaving Turkey years ago, his name still rings loud in the league. He became a fan favorite during his time at Galatasaray, where he helped the club win the Turkish League and Cup double in the 2018-2019 season.
Onyekuru’s career has taken him across Europe. He started with KAS Eupen in Belgium, earned a transfer to Everton in the English Premier League, then moved to Anderlecht, Monaco, Olympiacos, and several Turkish sides including Adana Demirspor.
