Bundesliga side RB Leipzig have stepped up efforts to sign Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, the young talent who is now catching the attention of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle.

With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers fast approaching, Chukwuemeka’s name is gaining more weight in Nigeria’s football conversations.

According to reports coming out of Germany, RB Leipzig have already begun talks with Chelsea and are showing serious interest in a permanent deal for the 21-year-old. Transfer expert Florian Plettenberg revealed that both clubs are expected to meet again on Wednesday to continue discussions.

Chelsea, who are actively trying to cut down their squad while managing finances, are willing to let Chukwuemeka go only if the deal is permanent. This has already turned away Borussia Dortmund, who had hoped to take him on loan again after a short spell last season that saw Chukwuemeka play 17 times and score once.

RB Leipzig seem more determined and are pushing to seal the transfer. But there may be more going on behind the scenes. Sources suggest that this deal could open a path for Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons to join Chelsea.

Simons, who is currently with Leipzig, is admired at Stamford Bridge. Talks are ongoing, and it appears both clubs could work out a swap arrangement with some financial adjustments to balance the deal.

Chukwuemeka, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022, still has three years left on his contract. But with limited chances in Chelsea’s crowded midfield, a move to Germany could give him the opportunity to play regularly and boost his international hopes.
