Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has made a stunning revelation about his career that sounds almost unbelievable.
The Bayer Leverkusen forward claimed that he once played in official league matches in Europe without signing any contract, just to prove himself.
While speaking on The Culture League podcast, Boniface shared how his first experience outside Nigeria led him to Northern Cyprus in 2018. At the time, he was still on the books of grassroots club Real Sapphire.
He was sent on loan to Lefke T.S.K., a team competing in the KTFF Süper Lig, the top division in Northern Cyprus.
But Northern Cyprus is not recognized by FIFA. Its football is run by a different system under the Cyprus Turkish Football Association, which operates independently from the rest of the football world.
“My first time abroad, I went to Northern Cyprus. The story is long,” Boniface said. “When I got there, I found out they’re not under FIFA. They operate on their own.”
Despite not signing any paperwork, Boniface was thrown straight into league games as if he had already become part of the squad.
“I was on trial. I hadn’t signed, but I was already playing league matches,” he said.
One Chance, One Opponent, and No Paper Signed
His situation was even more intense because he was not the only player trying to earn a spot. He revealed that the club was choosing between him and another African player.
“There were just two of us, me and a Senegalese guy. They only needed one player. As a Nigerian, I knew I had to give everything.”
Boniface described the strange advice he got before the trip from his agent, who told him:
“Take the corner kick and then go and score it yourself. This is not a joke.”
The young striker saw the experience as a do-or-die chance to change his life. That risk eventually paid off. From playing in a football system ignored by FIFA, he later signed with Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, where his professional career truly began.
Today, Boniface is one of the top talents in German football. He was a standout player for Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023–2024 season, helping them win the Bundesliga and German Cup. He also played a big role in their run to the Europa League final.
