Royal Honour: Super Falcons Star Gets Chieftaincy Title After WAFCON Glory

Super Falcons defender “Tosin Demehin” has been conferred with the prestigious chieftaincy title of “Yeye Akeweje Ilaje” by His Royal Majesty, High Chief Kayode Aiyetiwa, the Oba of Bariga in Lagos.

The honour celebrates her outstanding contribution to Nigeria’s victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and her rising leadership role within the Ilaje community.

The Ilaje, a coastal Yoruba group renowned for their rich cultural heritage, bestowed the title to recognize Demehin’s excellence on the pitch and her potential to inspire the younger generation.

WAFCON Victory and National Recognition

Demehin was part of the Super Falcons squad that secured Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title, defeating Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling comeback final. Her defensive prowess and leadership were crucial to the team’s success.

In appreciation of their triumph, President Bola Tinubu rewarded each Super Falcons player with $100,000 and national honours.

Additionally, the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, gifted Demehin ₦30 million and a house in Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile, Akure.

Demehin took to social media to share her excitement, stating:

  • With deep gratitude and a heart full of pride, I’m deeply honored to share that I have been officially conferred with the prestigious title of Yeye Akeweje Ilaje.

She added:

  • This is more than a title, it’s a call to inspire, lead, and uplift the youth of our beloved Ilaje community.

Demehin, who debuted for Nigeria in 2022, has also represented the country at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2024 Olympic Games, marking her as one of the nation’s brightest football stars.
