Nigeria’s hopes of reviving their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign have been hit with a major setback as first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali sustained an injury while playing for Chippa United in the South African Premier Division.

As reported by Sport buddy, Super Eagles goalkeeper was suspended by football authorities.

The 29-year-old, who has been Nigeria’s undisputed number one since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, was forced off in the 35th minute during a clash against Richards Bay on Tuesday night. He had to be stretchered off, sparking fears over his availability for next month’s crucial fixtures.

Super Eagles Under Pressure

The Super Eagles are currently struggling in Group C, sitting fourth with just two points from three matches. They trail leaders South Africa by six points and are one point behind both Benin and Rwanda.

Eric Chelle’s men face Rwanda in Uyo on September 3 before travelling to Bloemfontein to face South Africa three days later. These matches are seen as decisive for Nigeria’s chances of making it to the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Losing Nwabali, who has provided stability and confidence at the back, would be a huge blow.

Possible Replacements

If Nwabali is ruled out, Chelle will have to turn to less experienced options such as Amas Obasogie, Adebayo Adeleye, or teenage talent Ebenezer Harcourt. None, however, match Nwabali’s consistency and composure, which have been crucial for Nigeria since he broke into the squad last year.

The Super Eagles will now anxiously await medical updates from Chippa United to determine the extent of the injury. Nwabali, with 13 international caps, was instrumental in Nigeria’s run to the 2023 AFCON final and also lifted the Unity Cup earlier this year.
