William Osula in Newcastle United colours — the striker could be cap-tied to Denmark this month

William Osula Nigeria hopes could be over within ten days. The Newcastle United striker has been named in Denmark’s squad for this month’s UEFA Nations League fixtures, and a single appearance against Portugal or Norway would tie him to the country of his birth for good — ending any chance of him ever wearing the green and white of the Super Eagles.

Denmark coach Brian Riemer included the 23-year-old in his squad on Wednesday, 4 November, for the trip to Portugal in Braga on 14 November and the home meeting with Norway at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on 17 November. Both are competitive internationals, which is what makes them so decisive for Osula’s future.

Nigeria have watched this one coming for months. Born in Aarhus to a Nigerian father, Osula is one of the most talked-about dual-nationality players on the Super Eagles’ radar — and the clock on his international future is now ticking loudly. For the latest on Nigeria’s internationals and the weekend’s action, check our today’s predictions page.

Why One Game Changes Everything for Osula

The rules are brutally simple. Osula has represented Denmark at youth level and has already played senior football for the Danes, but only in friendlies — he made his debut against DR Congo on 3 June and started the win over Ukraine four days later. Friendly appearances do not bind a player. A competitive senior appearance after the age of 21 does.

That is why the Nations League matters so much. Play one minute against Portugal or Norway and Osula becomes permanently cap-tied to Denmark under FIFA’s eligibility rules. There would be no way back to Nigeria, no matter how much the Super Eagles wanted him later.

It is a fate Nigeria know well. The Super Eagles have already lost Patrick Dorgu, Philip Billing and Isabella Obaze to Denmark after the trio featured in cap-tying games for their country of birth. Osula would be the latest — and arguably the most painful — name on that list, given his age and his form.

The Tug of War Over William Osula

Reports in Nigeria have claimed the Nigeria Football Federation made efforts to persuade Osula to switch allegiance, with contact said to have been made with the striker’s representatives. Other sources, however, insist no contact has been established between the player and the Super Eagles’ technical crew, and describe the reports of an NFF approach as unfounded. Either way, the decision now rests almost entirely with the player — and with Riemer’s team selection.

Denmark are not hiding how much they value him. Former Denmark striker Emil Berggreen has publicly urged the Danish FA to secure Osula’s allegiance before Nigeria can act, warning that the Danes “must not lose William Osula”. Riemer’s decision to recall him for two huge Nations League fixtures — after injury kept him out of Denmark’s first four games in the competition — is a clear statement of intent.

Osula himself has never closed the door on Nigeria. After scoring a 90th-minute winner against Manchester United in March 2026, he confirmed publicly that he was eligible to represent the Super Eagles. His recent club form has only strengthened his case: three goals in his last four Premier League appearances for Newcastle, including that dramatic late winner at St James’ Park.

Why It Matters for Nigeria Right Now

The timing could hardly be worse for Eric Chelle. Nigeria’s attack is already stretched thin heading into the crucial AFCON 2027 qualifying double-header against Tanzania on 13 and 17 November. Victor Osimhen is out after knee surgery, Samuel Chukwueze has been ruled out following hip surgery in London, and Frank Onyeka is a major doubt with a groin injury — a crisis we detailed in our Super Eagles injury crisis report.

Osula would not have solved all of Chelle’s problems, but a 23-year-old Premier League striker in form is exactly the profile Nigeria are short of at the moment. Losing him to Denmark while the Super Eagles are already counting their injured attackers would sting twice over.

There is a twist in the tale this weekend, too. Osula’s Newcastle travel to Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon to face Fulham — and Super Eagles pair Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey. It is a meeting of the present and the possible future of Nigerian football in one fixture, even if Osula has been a doubt for the game after an ankle problem. Whatever happens at Craven Cottage, though, the date that matters most for Osula is 14 November in Braga.

If he steps onto the pitch for Denmark that night, the debate ends. Nigeria’s window to claim one of the Premier League’s most exciting young strikers will have closed — and the Super Eagles will be left to wonder what might have been.
