Ryan Alebiosu injury — Blackburn Rovers defender out for months after knee surgery

Blackburn Rovers defender Ryan Alebiosu faces three to four months on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury, with manager Tony Mowbray confirming the Super Eagles right-back will need surgery. The 24-year-old was hurt during Tuesday’s Championship defeat to Stoke City at Ewood Park and has not played since, in a blow that rules him out for the rest of 2026.

Alebiosu had been one of the first names on Mowbray’s team sheet this season, starting all 14 of Blackburn’s league matches before the injury struck. His absence now leaves Rovers without their most reliable outlet on the right flank — and adds another name to the growing list of Nigerian internationals sidelined at the worst possible time.

How Ryan Alebiosu picked up the knee injury

The injury happened in the first half of Blackburn’s home meeting with Stoke on Tuesday, 3 November. Alebiosu went down and could not continue, leaving the pitch in the 41st minute to be replaced by summer signing Gady Beyuku. Blackburn went on to lose the game 2-1.

Mowbray admitted after the match that he did not yet know how serious the problem was, joking that his right-back seemed to pick up a knock in almost every game and usually play on. This time, though, the scan told a different story. Alebiosu was sent for assessment on Wednesday, and the results confirmed damage that will require an operation.

The defender himself confirmed the scale of the setback on social media, telling Blackburn supporters he would not be seen again this year. “Gutted, upset but god has bigger plans,” he wrote. “Will be back stronger for sure, see you 2027 Rovers.”

Mowbray confirms surgery and a long layoff for Ryan Alebiosu

Speaking after Blackburn’s 2-1 win over West Ham United on Saturday, Mowbray confirmed the news nobody at Ewood Park wanted to hear. “He had a scan on Wednesday. It’s not good news for him obviously,” the Rovers boss said. “He looks like he’s going to have an operation which is three or four months, maybe a touch longer. We’re all disappointed.”

Mowbray was quick to underline just how much Alebiosu brings to his side, pointing to the attacking threat the Nigerian offers from full-back. “Ryan’s a real positive for the team. The attacking threat from right back with the legs and the athleticism he brings,” he said.

That athleticism has been a defining feature of Blackburn’s play this season. Alebiosu’s pace and willingness to overlap have given Rovers width on the right, and his consistency — 14 starts from 14 league games — made him one of the few ever-presents in a squad that has been hit hard by injuries.

What it means for Blackburn and the Super Eagles

In the short term, 20-year-old Beyuku is the man Mowbray will turn to. The summer signing made his full debut in Alebiosu’s absence against West Ham and grew into the game as Blackburn held on for a 2-1 win, with Andri Gudjohnsen and fellow Nigerian Dapo Afolayan on the scoresheet. Mowbray praised the youngster’s improvement through the contest, but a three-to-four-month absence is a long time to ask a rookie to fill the boots of an ever-present.

For Nigeria, the timing could hardly be worse. Alebiosu was not named in Eric Chelle’s 24-man squad for the AFCON qualifiers against Tanzania on 13 and 17 November, and the Super Eagles are already without Victor Osimhen after Osimhen’s knee surgery and Samuel Chukwueze following Chukwueze’s hip surgery. Semi Ajayi limped off against Arsenal on Saturday too, leaving Chelle counting the cost of a brutal week for his defenders.

Alebiosu will now focus on surgery and rehabilitation, with a return pencilled in for early 2027 at the earliest. Blackburn, meanwhile, must find a way to cope without their first-choice right-back through the busiest stretch of the Championship season.
