Chelsea may miss out on Nigerian wonderkid Bright Ede, as Manchester United have entered the race with strong interest.
Ede, an 18-year-old centre-back who plays for Motor Lublin in Poland, has quickly become one of Europe’s most talked-about young defenders.
Born in Warsaw to Nigerian parents, he only joined Lublin earlier this year for a small fee of €100,000. But after just six senior appearances and one goal, his stock has skyrocketed.
Chelsea were the first major club to spot the rising star. The London side saw Ede as the next piece in their youth-based team, after recently signing South American prospects Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez.
However, after their Club World Cup victory, talks around Ede were briefly put on hold.
This delay may cost them the defender, as Manchester United wasted no time in sending scouts to Lublin’s training base and watching him in a recent match against Arka Gdynia.
United view him as a strong investment for their future, following the success of youngsters like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.
Also, Benfica, known for developing talents such as Ruben Dias and Joao Felix, are quietly monitoring the situation. While they have not gone public with their move, reports from Poland suggest the Portuguese side may be preparing an offer.
Motor Lublin are holding out for €11 million. If the deal goes through at that price, it would break the Polish top flight’s record for an outgoing transfer. That fee would also be a huge lift for Motor Lublin, a club with a yearly budget of just €8 million.
Ede’s next move could define his career. While he might not be ready for top-flight English football immediately, clubs see long-term value in his raw talent and calm defensive style.
