Umar Sadiq in Nigeria colours — five Super Eagles stars face big weekend tests abroad

Five Nigerian players abroad walk into some of the toughest fixtures of the European season this weekend, with league leaders, title chasers and a European champion standing in their way. From the Emirates to the Mestalla and the Metropolitano, it is a Saturday and Sunday that could shape reputations — and, with the Super Eagles’ AFCON qualifiers against Tanzania just days away, Eric Chelle will be watching every one of them.

The headline act is in Spain on Saturday night, but the tests start early in England. Here is how the weekend lines up for Nigeria’s stars.

Sadiq leads the charge against Real Madrid

Umar Sadiq could hardly have picked a better moment to find his scoring touch. The Valencia striker came off the bench last Sunday to score the only goal in a 1-0 win at Elche, finishing a lightning counter-attack eight minutes after his introduction, and the strike handed coach Javier Aguirre his first win in charge.

It was Sadiq’s second league goal of the season, and it capped a comeback after two months out injured — an absence that cost him Valencia’s previous seven league games. Aguirre described the striker’s return as “great news for everybody”, and he will need all of that good news on Saturday night, when Valencia host Real Madrid at the Mestalla (9pm WAT).

Valencia are 19th in La Liga with nine points from 11 games and have scored only eight goals, the joint-lowest in the division. Madrid, by contrast, have won their last seven games in all competitions and sit third, three points behind Barcelona. For Sadiq, who has scored twice in just four league appearances this season, it is the stage to show his Elche winner was no one-off.

Ajayi and Aina face the Premier League’s big guns

Semi Ajayi and Hull City have the daunting task of visiting Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday (4pm WAT). The Tigers are 11th but have gone eight games without a win in all competitions and seven in the league, while Arsenal have 24 points from nine games and are the only club with a 100 per cent home record this season.

Ajayi played the full game in Hull’s 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town last weekend, making six clearances before being booked in the 88th minute. He will need another full shift at his best if Hull are to leave north London with anything.

Later on Saturday, Ola Aina and Nottingham Forest host Manchester City at the City Ground (6:30pm WAT). Forest are 19th with six points from nine games and have scored only six goals, the joint-lowest in the league, while City arrive looking to respond after back-to-back league defeats — even if they did win 3-2 at RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Aina started Forest’s 2-0 defeat at Brentford last weekend but was substituted at half-time, and he has made only one appearance in the club’s last three league games. He may have to be patient again, with Daniel Munoz tipped to start at right wing-back, but a game against the champions is exactly the kind of occasion where a player can force his way back in.

Sunday: Lookman and Dele-Bashiru in title-race showdowns

Sunday brings two more heavyweight assignments. Ademola Lookman and Atletico Madrid host leaders Barcelona at the Metropolitano (9pm WAT) in a meeting of the top two in La Liga. Atletico are second on 28 points, two behind, and have won their last seven league games.

Lookman has one league goal this season, against Sevilla in August, and came on in the 76th minute of the 2-0 win at Levante last weekend, a week after he was withdrawn at half-time. Reports in Spain say coach Diego Simeone is considering a switch to a 4-3-3 that would put the forward on the left wing — and against a Barcelona side that have scored 46 goals in 11 league games, his pace on the break could be decisive.

Earlier on Sunday, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and league leaders Lazio visit Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona (12:30pm WAT). Lazio have 28 points and have won their last six games. Dele-Bashiru came on in the 55th minute of the 2-1 win over Cagliari last weekend and appealed for a penalty after contact in the box, but none was given. Napoli are eighth and have lost their last two games, including a 4-1 defeat to Porto on Wednesday.

What it means for the Super Eagles

The timing matters. Nigeria host Tanzania in Uyo on Friday, November 13, before the return fixture in Dar es Salaam four days later, in decisive 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers — and Chelle is already without two of his biggest names. Samuel Chukwueze has been ruled out after hip surgery, while Victor Osimhen is set to undergo knee surgery on Saturday.

That makes this weekend doubly important: a strong showing from Sadiq, Lookman, Ajayi, Aina and Dele-Bashiru would not only lift their clubs, it would hand Chelle some timely good news before the Tanzania double-header.
