Gift Orban has the stage to himself tonight. While his compatriot and Golden Boot rival Victor Osimhen goes under the knife in Istanbul, the Amedspor striker can move clear at the top of the Turkish Süper Lig scoring chart when the league’s top two meet at RAMS Park.
Orban and Osimhen are locked together on nine league goals apiece after ten rounds, but only one of them will be on the pitch this evening. Galatasaray confirmed on Friday that Osimhen needs arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, an injury picked up in Tuesday’s Champions League win over VfB Stuttgart, and the striker has been ruled out of both Saturday’s league clash and Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Tanzania.
That leaves the Golden Boot race wide open — and Orban, who has been Amedspor’s revelation this season, knows exactly what is at stake.
Top-of-the-table clash at RAMS Park
Saturday’s fixture is the biggest game of the Turkish season so far. Galatasaray sit top of the table with 25 points from ten matches, with Amedspor just two points behind in second. An away win would lift the visitors above the champions and to the summit; a home win would stretch Galatasaray’s lead to five points.
Kickoff is 5pm WAT (19:00 local time) at RAMS Park, and the subplot is impossible to ignore: the two leading scorers in the division are both Nigerian, and tonight only one of them can add to his tally.
Galatasaray will also be without captain Abdulkerim Bardakci, who is suspended after his red card in the Istanbul derby against Fenerbahce. The champions have still won their last five matches in all competitions, including Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Stuttgart, but they will be without their leading marksman for the first time this season.
Nine goals, four assists — Gift Orban’s stunning loan spell
Orban’s numbers this season demand attention. The 24-year-old has scored nine goals and provided four assists in ten league appearances since joining Amedspor on loan from Hoffenheim, and he has been directly involved in more goals than any other player in the division.
His latest contribution came last Sunday, when he scored and set up a team-mate in Amedspor’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Eyüpspor. It was the latest statement in a loan spell that has transformed the newly promoted side into genuine title contenders, with Amedspor scoring 25 goals in their opening ten games — two more than Galatasaray themselves.
The form is a sharp contrast to the difficult spell Orban endured in Germany. After joining Hoffenheim from Lyon in January for around nine million euros, he struggled for regular football, and a move away was widely expected in the summer. Instead, the loan to Turkey has given him exactly what he needed: a team built around his pace and finishing, and a manager willing to trust him every week.
Osimhen’s absence opens the door
Osimhen’s own record this season has been remarkable. The Galatasaray striker has nine goals and three assists in just eight league appearances, needing only 555 minutes to reach his tally — a goal every 62 minutes, the best rate in the division. He scored both goals in the 2-1 derby win over Fenerbahce on October 26 and found the net again in last Friday’s 4-0 win away at Konyaspor.
But his knee injury, and the surgery scheduled for today at Maslak Acibadem Hospital under club doctor Yener Ince, means his tally is frozen for now. Turkish reports suggest he could be sidelined for around three weeks, with the Champions League meeting with Aston Villa on November 24 earmarked as a possible return date — although Galatasaray have not confirmed any timeline.
That pause is Orban’s opportunity. A goal tonight would take him to ten for the season and leave him alone at the top, ahead of Osimhen and the chasing pair of Mohamed Salah of Trabzonspor and Eldor Shomurodov, who both sit on eight.
A Nigerian one-two at the top
Whatever happens at RAMS Park, the early story of the Turkish season belongs to Nigeria’s strikers. Two Super Eagles forwards lead the scoring chart in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues, and the head-to-head between their clubs is now a title race as well as a personal duel.
For Orban, the motivation goes beyond the Golden Boot. His goals have already put him firmly in the conversation around Eric Chelle’s striker options for the Super Eagles, with Nigeria short of attacking options for the Tanzania double-header after losing both Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze to surgery. A starring role in a win over the champions tonight would be impossible to ignore.
First, though, comes the football. Amedspor have nothing to lose and top spot to gain, Galatasaray have a five-point cushion to protect, and Gift Orban has a Golden Boot lead to seize. In a season full of Nigerian success stories in Turkey, tonight could be his loudest statement yet.
