Leeds 1-0 Tottenham was decided by a substitute who barely had time to break sweat. Noah Okafor came off the bench in the 77th minute at Elland Road and scored in the 79th — just 97 seconds later — to hand Leeds United a 1-0 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday and end the Yorkshire club’s five-game winless run.
It was a win built on patience and a manager’s gamble. For more than an hour, Leeds had the better of a tight, niggly contest without finding a way through, and Tottenham — chasing a fourth straight league win — looked content to ride out the pressure. Then Daniel Farke sent on Okafor and Harry Wilson together, and the game turned in an instant.
The goal itself was a snapshot of the substitutes’ impact. A long throw was headed on by Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Wilson pushed the ball into Okafor’s path, and the Switzerland striker skipped beyond Rodrigo Bentancur before driving his finish past Antonin Kinsky into the bottom-left corner. It was his second league goal of the season, and the celebrations told the story — Okafor whipped his shirt off and was booked a minute later, in the 80th minute. He did not care one bit.
Okafor makes an instant impact
The numbers behind the goal are remarkable. Opta recorded Okafor’s strike as coming 97 seconds after his introduction, making it the fastest goal by a substitute in the Premier League so far this season — and Leeds’ first goal from the bench in the league all campaign.
It was also the perfect response to a difficult week for the 26-year-old. Okafor had been a major doubt for the game after picking up an adductor problem, and he started on the bench as Farke went with Lukas Nmecha up front. When his chance finally came, he needed barely a touch to settle the match.
“I came in, all I want is to help the team as much as I can,” Okafor said afterwards. “I’m of course happy about the goal but more happy about the three points.”
Leeds had threatened before the breakthrough. Calvert-Lewin headed wide moments after having an effort blocked, and the home side finished with 16 shots to Tottenham’s five. But for long spells it looked like another frustrating afternoon — until Farke’s double change.
Leeds 1-0 Tottenham: the VAR flashpoints
The match will also be remembered for two controversial VAR moments that went Leeds’ way. Early on, Spurs breathed a sigh of relief when VAR ruled that Mateus Fernandes had not handled the ball inside the penalty area.
Then, about ten minutes before half-time, came the bigger flashpoint. Jayden Bogle caught Mathys Tel’s trailing ankle with his studs in an ugly challenge that left the Tottenham winger writhing on the ground. The VAR check lasted more than four minutes, but Bogle stayed on the pitch — a decision that infuriated the visitors and their manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Tottenham’s frustration only grew after the break as Leeds gained the upper hand. Spurs came agonisingly close to a late equaliser, but goalkeeper James Trafford dived full length to keep out Jan Paul van Hecke’s header from a late free-kick, preserving a win that had looked unlikely for much of the afternoon.
What the result means for Leeds and Spurs
For Leeds, this was more than three points. It was their third league win of the season, their first victory since September, and their first win over Tottenham since May 2021. The result lifted Farke’s side up to eighth in the table on 14 points, and into the international break with momentum and belief restored.
For Tottenham, the defeat ended a run of three straight league wins and halted a remarkable climb. De Zerbi’s side had shot up the table from bottom to ninth before kick-off, but they slipped back to tenth after this setback — their second defeat in eight league games. The Londoners had chances to feel hard done by, particularly over the Bogle incident, but they managed only five shots all afternoon and never truly tested Trafford until the final minutes.
The contrast in the two benches said plenty. Farke’s changes won the game; De Zerbi’s side had no answer once Okafor struck.
What’s next after the international break
The Premier League now pauses for the international window, with action returning in two weeks. Leeds will hope the break does not stall the momentum created by the Leeds 1-0 Tottenham win, while Tottenham will use the fortnight to regroup and reset after a defeat that ended their winning run.

Leeds’ win also shakes up the picture at the top, where Arsenal edged Hull 1-0 to stay six points clear and Nottingham Forest stunned Manchester City 3-1. Sunday brings another heavyweight clash, with Manchester United kicking off against Aston Villa in the relegation zone.
