Chael Sonnen was born April 3, 1977 in either Milwaukie, Oregon, or West Linn, Oregon, and began wrestling at the age of nine. 

He finished second in the state competition while attending West Linn High School. With the intention of fighting in the UFC after high school, Sonnen started boxing training in 1996.

In 2001, he received his Bachelor of Science in sociology from the University of Oregon.

After graduating from high school, Sonnen attended Brigham Young University before moving to Eugene, Oregon, to attend the University of Oregon, as BYU was thinking about discontinuing its wrestling department.

Sonnen won two Dave Schultz Memorial International Greco-Roman titles, finished second in the PAC-10 twice, won a silver medal in the 2000 Greco-Roman World University Championships, and was named an All-American while attending Oregon. In 2001, he received his Bachelor of Science in sociology from the University of Oregon.

Early career

At the age of 19, Sonnen defeated Ben Hailey in Vancouver, Washington, to launch his mixed martial arts career in 1997. Next, he overcame Jason “Mayhem” Miller, a potential ICON Sport Middleweight Champion and Strikeforce Middleweight contender.

Prior to falling to Trevor Prangley, he had won six of his contests. In his UFC debut, Sonnen submitted to a second-round triangle choke in a Light Heavyweight match against former IFC Light Heavyweight Champion Renato Sobral at UFC 55.

He then took revenge on Trevor Prangley by winning by unanimous decision at UFC Ultimate Fight Night 4. He was defeated by an armbar in their third encounter at UFC 60 versus Jeremy Horn. Not long later, the UFC fired him.

Sonnen made his Bodog Fight debut in May 2006, winning via TKO over Tim Credeur. He went on to defeat Tim McKenzie in 13 seconds with a D’arce choke, win by unanimous decision over Alexey Oleinik, and submit PRIDE and UFC veteran Amar Suloev via TKO.

At SuperFight 20: Homecoming, Sonnen defeated Kyacey Uscola, who would later join the Ultimate Fighter, after leaving Bodog.

Sonnen and Paulo Filho squared off for the WEC Middleweight Championship in December 2007. In the second round, at 4:55, Sonnen was submitted in controversy. Instead of tapping out, Sonnen sent out a painful scream that the referee took to be a verbal surrender.

March 26, 2008 was the original date of the rematch; however, it was canceled when Filho checked himself into a drug rehab facility. Rather, Sonnen faced and outclassed opponent Bryan Baker, whom he controlled for three rounds before winning by unanimous decision (30–26, 30–25, and 30–25). On November 5, 2008, Sonnen and Filho finally crossed paths once more.

Sonnen prevailed by unanimous decision after Filho showed signs of distraction throughout the fight and won all three rounds.

It was revealed on April 4, 2019, that Sonnen and Lyoto Machida would square off on June 14, 2019, at Bellator 222, marking Bellator’s return to Madison Square Garden.

In the second round, he was TKOed out. In the post-fight interview, Sonnen declared his retirement from mixed martial arts.

In 2010, Sonnen was a Republican running for the Oregon House of Representatives, 37th district. He announced his withdrawal from the campaign that June, citing a real estate-related legal dispute from 2006.

Personal life and family

Sonnen is a Catholic who is descended from Germany. He got married to Brittany in July of 2013 and welcomed their first child on June 4, 2015.

The couple’s first child, a son named Thero, was born two years later after their marriage. Sadly, their daughter Blauna Dian died shortly after her birth in 2016.
