Bernardo Silva Urges Joao Neves to Join Manchester City
Bernardo Silva has encouraged Benfica and Portugal midfielder Joao Neves to choose Manchester City over Manchester United. United have identified the 19-year-old as a key summer transfer target and reportedly failed with a £51m bid for him.
The Red Devils are seeking a replacement for Casemiro, whose relationship with manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly deteriorated. Casemiro was left out of the FA Cup final against Manchester City and continues to be linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.
Neves, who has a £105m release clause, could be sold by Benfica for around £85m. United were considered front-runners for his signature, but Bernardo Silva has urged his international teammate to join him at City instead. “I told him to go to Manchester City!” Bernardo Silva said speaking to O’Jogo “He’s a player who has many clubs wanting him due to his success last season. As a Portuguese player I like, I’d love to see him by my side, but I want the best for him.”
Casemiro’s Potential Departure and Neves’ Future
Casemiro’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, with speculation of a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. Neves, expected to start for Portugal at Euro 2024 alongside Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, has been tipped for a big move by Fernandes himself. “I don’t know if United rumours are true, but I know he is ready for that big jump,” Fernandes said.
Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic, however, believes it might be premature for Neves to leave Benfica. “Joao is already at a big club. I think it’s too early to leave, but of course, it’s his decision,” Matic remarked. Neves has made 75 appearances for Benfica, including 55 in the 2023-24 season, and has six caps for Portugal since his debut last October.
