38-year-old Cameroonian football player Landry Nguemo passed away in a terrible car accident near Yaoundé on Thursday.
The incident happened a few kilometers outside of Yaoundé when Nguemo’s chauffeur-driven vehicle and a sand truck collided. Nguemo and his driver both passed away instantly.
Cameroon federation pays tribute to Nguemo
Cameroon federation also put out a statement to confirm the news, extending their deepest condolences.
According to BBC, the statement read, “The Cameroonian Football Federation has just learned the tragic news of the passing of former Indomitable Lion Landry Nguemo in a traffic accident.
“Nguemo, who was a key player for the Cameroonian national team from 2006 to 2014 and a former member of Girondins de Bordeaux, will be remembered for his contributions to football.
“FECAFOOT extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire football community.”
Samuel Eto’o, the head of the Cameroonian Football Federation and a former teammate of Nguemo, shared his sadness on social media.
AFCON star Nguemo’s career
Nguemo who retired from football in 2020 scored three goals in 42 games with the Indomitable Lions.
Throughout his career, Nguemo played for a number of teams, including Bordeaux and Saint-Etienne, two French teams who sent their sincerest sympathies.
At the age of 19, he signed his first contract at Nancy-Lorraine in France, where his professional career began.
Later, Nguemo played for AS Saint-Etienne and Girondins de Bordeaux before relocating to the Turkish and Norwegian leagues. He came back to Nancy to serve as a youth coach after retirement.
