Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen faces punishment from Napoli after attempting to force a transfer away from the club.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a phenomenal 2022/2023 season with Napoli. He secured a Serie A title with his club, won the league’s Golden Boot award, finished 8th in the Ballon d’Or rankings, and was crowned the 2023 CAF Footballer of the Year.
Victor Osimhen’s dilema
Despite signing a new contract in December 2023 with a significant salary increase and a €130 million release clause, Osimhen sought a move away this summer.
Several clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Al Ahli, expressed interest in Osimhen.
While personal terms were reportedly agreed with PSG, their offer, which included a player swap, was rejected by Napoli. Negotiations with Chelsea for a potential swap deal involving Romelu Lukaku also fell through.
A last minute switch to Saudi side Al Ahli also failed, leaving the Nigerian striker stuck in Napples.
During the transfer negotiations, Osimhen was notably absent from Napoli’s pre-season games and training sessions.
With the deadline-day transfer debacle over, Osimhen will remain at Napoli at least until the next transfer window.
Victor Osimhen’s purnishment
According to Caught offside, Osimhen’s attempt to force a move will likely result in him being excluded from Napoli’s first-team squad.
Coach Antonio Conte reportedly favors his new signing, Romelu Lukaku. Osimhen may only see playing time if Lukaku becomes unavailable.
