Paul Scholes has named Manchester United’s ‘worst ever signing’ after his former club was humiliated on Sunday evening, falling to a 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool at the Old Trafford.

Scholes, a United legend, during his illustrious career at Old Trafford, which spanned two decades, won several trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson, including 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and two Champions Leagues.

In a discussion sparked by fans, Scholes discussed the finest and worst signings in Manchester United’s history with journalist David Ornstein and former player Jamie Carragher.

He began by gushing over the impact Eric Cantona and Wayne Rooney had on the team.

The debate began when a fan labelled winger Antony as United’s worst ever signing, citing the Brazilian’s unused substitute appearance during Sunday’s humiliating defeat to Liverpool as proof.

Antony has only contributed 11 goals and five assists since his £85 million transfer from Ajax back in 2022.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old attacker, who recently overcame his off-field scandal, has yet to do anything notable this season, despite his promise, having only featured as a late substitute so far in this campaign.

However, Scholes had a different view as he travelled back memory lane to name a couple of great players who did not live up to expectations at the club.

He started, as quoted by Mail Sport,

”You know what, I was going to go a bit further back than that.

”(Juan Sebastian) Veron was a good player, a great player in Europe and I’m not sure why it didn’t work out for him.

Scholes then delved into United’s goalkeeping recruits after the exit of Peter Schmeichel, while singling out Mark Bosnich, whom he claimed was so unprofessional that he could not even kick a ball.

”I go back to the goalkeepers, when we had to replace Peter Schmeichel which is always going to be difficult.’

”Fabian Barthez was great, but I’m thinking more like (Massimo) Taibi, Mark Bosnich… I thought he was a good keeper at Villa, Mark. He came to us and was so unprofessional. Honestly, it was ridiculous.

”In shooting practice, you normally have like 15-20 minutes, after three shots he was knackered. And I never realised, he couldn’t kick a football! Honestly, I’d never seen anything like it.

”We played Everton away first game of the season and none of us picked up on it – he couldn’t reach the halfway line. And there was no wind, it was a perfect day.”

Manchester United’s next Premier League match will be a trip to St. Mary’s as they face Southampton in an early kick-off, hoping to bounce back from matchday three’s disappointment.
