Fulham vs Newcastle brings a rare Nigerian flavour to Craven Cottage this afternoon, with three Super Eagles men in the starting line-ups for the Premier League clash that kicks off at 4pm WAT on Saturday, 7 November.
Calvin Bassey leads Fulham out as captain, Alex Iwobi starts in midfield for the Cottagers, and William Osula spearheads Newcastle’s attack — a head-to-head that gives Nigerian fans a stake in both dressing rooms.
Fulham vs Newcastle team news: Bassey captains, Iwobi starts
Bassey wearing the armband is no surprise to anyone who has followed Fulham this season. The 26-year-old defender has been handed the matchday captaincy by head coach Alvaro Arbeloa and has grown into one of the London club’s most influential figures since joining from Ajax in 2023.
He anchors a back four of Timothy Castagne, David Affengruber, Bassey and Antonee Robinson, with Bernd Leno in goal. Ahead of them, Sander Berge and Shea Charles sit in midfield, while Iwobi, Oscar Bobb and Josh King support lone striker Gonzalo Garcia.
Iwobi’s start is his latest landmark in a remarkable run of availability. The 30-year-old passed 100 league appearances for Fulham in September and took his Premier League tally to 328 appearances in October — numbers that underline why he remains one of the first names on the Fulham teamsheet and in Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles plans.
Osula leads the line for Newcastle
At the other end, Osula gets the nod as Newcastle’s No. 9, with Yoane Wissa playing just behind him and Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy on the flanks. Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle made four changes from the side beaten by Everton on Monday, bringing in Malick Thiaw, Sean Steur, Wissa and Murphy.
It is a big afternoon for Osula for reasons beyond the three points. The 23-year-old striker is one Denmark appearance away from being tied to the country of his birth, and every start he makes for Newcastle sharpens the question of where his international future lies. He shook off an ankle scare from the EFL Cup tie at Everton to keep his place up front.
Newcastle are without the injured Joelinton, while Jacob Ramsey serves a one-match suspension after his sending-off at Everton.
What is at stake at Craven Cottage
Both sides arrive in the bottom half of the table, which makes this more than a routine Saturday fixture. Fulham are unbeaten in three league games after a winless start to the season, while Newcastle are trying to stop a slide of three defeats in their last five.
For the Nigerian trio, the timing could hardly be better. Bassey and Iwobi were both named in Chelle’s 24-man Super Eagles squad for the AFCON qualifiers against Tanzania, and a strong showing at Craven Cottage would be the perfect way to head into the international break. Osula, meanwhile, gets another chance to show why Nigeria are so keen to keep him in green.
The confirmed line-ups mean all three will be on the pitch from the first whistle — and for Nigerian fans, that alone makes Fulham vs Newcastle one of the games of the weekend. For more on the weekend’s action, check today’s predictions.
