Chelsea star Malo Gusto will be absent from France Under-23s’ forthcoming friendly matches against the Ivory Coast and the United States due to illness
Gusto, who earned his senior international debut in France’s 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in November, was not included in Didier Deschamps’ 23-man squad for the team’s Euro 2024 warm-up matches this month.
Instead, the 20-year-old Chelsea full-back was selected for Thierry Henry’s Under-23 squad and was anticipated to start in both upcoming matches.
France aims to build momentum for the Paris Olympics this summer, with fixtures against Ivory Coast today followed by a clash against the USA in Sochaux on Monday.

Henry will face the absence of one of his key squad members, Gusto, who is reported to be unwell this morning, as per French publication L’Equipe.
Kiliann Sildillia to replace Gusto
The report indicates that the right-back bid farewell to the rest of the group at their training base in Chateauroux and is expected to return to London later this evening.
In Gusto’s absence, the young defender is likely to be replaced by either Kiliann Sildillia or Bafode Diakite on the right side of Henry’s defense.
Mauricio Pochettino will undoubtedly monitor Gusto’s fitness closely as Chelsea prepares to host Premier League strugglers Burnley in just over a week’s time.
Malo Gusto so far this season
The Frenchman has made 15 starts in the English top flight this season, showcasing his talent in the absence of injured club captain Reece James.
Chelsea secured Gusto’s services from Lyon for a fee of €30m (£26m) in January 2023, subsequently loaning him back to the Ligue 1 outfit for the remainder of the season.
Former Arsenal and Manchester City star Bacary Sagna expressed confidence in his compatriot’s potential, suggesting Gusto possesses the qualities to become “the best player in the Premier League” in his position.
Gusto delights Pochettino
Pochettino has also been impressed by Gusto’s progress, acknowledging his rapid adaptation to English football and his significance within the team, particularly evident after Chelsea’s FA Cup victory over Leicester.
While injuries have occasionally sidelined Gusto, Pochettino emphasized the young defender’s resilience and the necessary adjustment period expected of players transitioning to a new league and environment.
