This season, Stamford Bridge witnessed plenty of drama, excitement, and goals, with Soccer Aid being no exception. The England XI triumphed in a highly entertaining and high-scoring match, winning 6-3. The nine total goals set a new record for this charity match, now in its 13th edition.
Ignoring the throwback sandy pitch, currently under renovation after a long season and recent youth tournaments, the quality on display in the first half could have been mistaken for a proper match at times. Both Petr Čech and David James were beaten within the first fifteen minutes, with returning idol Eden Hazard placing a free kick just out of James’ reach to equalize after Joe Cole had opened the scoring.
England XI Triumphs in Exciting Contest
The World XI took the lead with Alessandro del Piero replicating his classic finish from the 2006 World Cup, before Ellen White made history by becoming the first female goalscorer in the event’s history. She equalized for England at the half-hour mark, set up by some impressive skill from an injury-free Jack Wilshere.
