5. National Hockey League (NHL)
The NHL generates $6 billion a year in a league franchise in which North America is the sole source of fans. Coming in at 32 teams in the U.S. and Canada, the league lives off its loyal fan base, especially when it comes to regions where hockey is deep-rooted into the culture.

Its income is ticket sales, merchandise, broadcasting rights and sponsorships. Winter Classic and Stanley Cup playoff games have expanded the appeal of NHL both outdoors and on television, drawing millions of viewers every season. It also recently began participating in recent digital streaming deals that have broadened its reach and helped ensure that it will continue to grow steadily making it one of the richest sports leagues in the world.
